My Students
Writing is often the hardest literacy area for students to master. It is often approached by students with tears, attitude, and outright defiance. I am looking and identifying different approaches to writing that will create a genuine love of writing for my students.
I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day; the English Language Learners. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read.
Of my students, some are receiving Special Education services. Some are receiving Gifted Services. Some have a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD. They are all learning at different levels and in different ways.
My Project
When I was a child, the only way my mother could get me to eat broccoli was to add cheese. While I do not equate writing and broccoli to be the same, I do realize the principle at the heart of this situation.
Most of my students will avoid writing at all costs. I can get them to read voraciously over the summer. But for three solid months, they do not write a thing. So starting 5th grade off with a lesson in using capital letters and periods is not only frustrating to me, but boring and embarrassing for them.
What I would like to do is a series of fun writing projects where my students forget they are actually writing! This is the Origami Project. My students will become masters in creating a certain piece of origami. They will then have to write their own instructions, step by step, to teach others how to make it. They will also have to take a picture of each step to illustrate the directions. They will then record their voice reading the directions. I am requesting 5 packs of origami paper, 1 digital camera, and 1 memory card to help with this fun writing project.
My students see me write letters, notes, cards, etc.
every day. I want to show them first hand how important writing is in their lives. The camera and origami paper bring together a common interest of my students and writing. Without realizing it, they will using all their writing knowledge to create exact and detailed instruction to help others create something awesome. They just need your help to start!
