This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In my classroom, our class motto hangs proud. It reminds my students every day that they must "Empower yourself. Empower your community. Empower your world." My students are capable beyond imagination, but they lack calculators that are essential for any high school chemistry class.

MAED High School is located in the heart of East Los Angeles.

This beautiful and diverse community has a deep and long history with the city of Los Angeles. MAED is an Alliance charter school that provides a college ready education for the students of East LA. The school is 100% Hispanic and 93% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Opened in 2007, MAED in its 3rd year is already providing an education that is superior to the local high school. By comparison, in 2011 MAEDs API was 703 and G. High's API was 630.

My Project

Because MAED is such a new school, we lack many of the essential supplies that are available at schools that have been open for many years. My 11th chemistry class lacks calculators that are essential to developing their skills as scientists. We have to remain on lower level problems because many of the higher level chemistry problems are beyond the math skills that any high school student, regardless of socio-economic status, should be able to perform at. Therefore, calculators will not only allow for the class to increase the rigor of the content that we are covering, but it will also open the doors to new content that they otherwise would not have been exposed to.

Many of us believe that calculators are cheep, affordable, and available in all classrooms.

Sadly, this is not the case. The chemistry students of MAED possess all the abilities and skills of their wealthier peers, but they are unable to demonstrate these skills because they lack the same tools that are given to their more affluent peers. These calculators will allow for my students to achieve at levels that are equal or better than students who are afforded far more resources.
