My Students
"You can't go forward looking back!" I teach at a high poverty school and the majority of my students do not get to interact with cutting-edge technology. They need the opportunity to move forward as other students; however, this opportunity is not provided to most of them outside of school.
My students are eager bundles of joy, who are not offered the same opportunities due to the high poverty areas in which they live in, as well as the increasing budget cuts facing school districts across the country.
They know that there is a world beyond what they live. They see it all of the time, but they have very few opportunities, if any, to experience it. They are open and receptive to learning new things, especially when it comes to technology. Learning is more fun for them when they are able to interact and become "a part" of the learning.
My Project
The school district where I teach recently changed its vision statement, and within this statement, it states that our goal is to graduate life-long learners. Working on the school leadership team and looking at the students' results as a whole, made me realize that our students are in need of something more than what we are giving them. It is up to educators to make that learning engaging, interactive, and unforgettable. A new writing program is being implemented within the school to address the writing deficiencies. I am the ELA/Writing teacher for 4th grade, so all of the students in the grade-level will have the opportunity to use these materials. The Nook and the Leap Frog gaming systems will provide the students with the chance to utilize technology and at the same time and learn the required standards.
It is very important that these students are exposed to technology that they have never seen or maybe even heard of before.
By allowing them to use this to learn, not only will we as a team increase student achievement, but we will create and support life-long learners.
