âAll truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.â It may be cliche to use a quote, but Galileo was especially right when I think about my science classroom. Students really do need hands-on experiences to ingrain them with the skills and content they need.
My students are nothing short of amazing!
They're smart, clever, inquisitive, and have an intense desire to learn about the world around them. It always warms my heart when I see them working so hard to learn the material I teach. The tragic part, however, is that they're deprived, sometimes financially and always significantly in education, especially science and math. I do my best to educate them with the materials that I have, but in all honesty my students need more hands-on, kinesthetic options to ensure that they truly capture the content to develop the critical thinking skills necessary to succeed both on their state test and in their lives beyond.
Science is an immensely important part of our everyday lives and the best way to be able to see that, first-hand, is through a classroom lab. In high school, this may consist of expensive microscopes and Bunsen burners. In 5th grade, what we really need are hands-on experiments and activities to reinforce the content learning they experience everyday. This would be simple things like student safety goggles for chemical reactions; a reading comprehension learning center to instill science content and reading skills; science-based games to provide invigorating practice before and after school; and, most importantly, massive activity tubs filled with vocabulary cards, transparencies, student experiments, extension ideas, homework practice, and tools to help students connect the proverbial scientific dots.
If you think about it, Galileo was completely right: the point is to discover truths about the world in which we live.
This couldn't influence my classroom more. My students are in dire need of scientific experiences. I can teach them the content, and we can practice skills all we want, but to truly learn students need to experience science for themselves. With help, we can achieve this reality; you can provide my kids with the spark they need to succeed not just in my class, but in life as well
