All classrooms are required to have a carpet in the classroom large enough to hold all their students. My classroom is now in need of this right now.
A students environment does play a major role in how they view learning.
I want my students to see that we care about not only what they learn but the environment as well. My students are kindergartens who come from very low income families in New York City. In fact many live beneath the poverty level. As funding for public school has been cut asking for a carpet will be last on the list. But to me it is just as important. My students do need one place they attend during the day to look and feel welcoming.
My students will have a rich warm environment where they will not only feel welcome but see it in the way the classroom is prepared for them. The carpet will be used by the class and for individual reading time for those students who are unable to sit on chairs for a long period of time.
Now you may say I am not completely convince so let me put it this way.
You go to your job and find out they have removed all of the chairs , tables, carpets, vending machines. They state to you your environment should not effect you doing your job after all your here to work not look around. Now tell me it would not make a difference. I want my students to know we thought they are important enough to make the difference.
