Do you remember those first books that engaged you as you learned how to read? I remember reading The Gingerbread Man to my Dad on his lunch hour. My students need engaging books that will not only entice them to read, but also develop their comprehension, vocabulary, and reading skills!
My lovely classroom is full of amazing children. This year I will have six, seven, eight & nine year olds.
I will have students who are just starting to learn to read, and others who are reading Because of Winn Dixie! I consider myself lucky to be in a room full of students who represent the beginners to those who are using reading to learn. I get to see the light bulb moment when readers really get reading and I get to read fantastic chapter books with my older students.
Our school is a charter Montessori Public School. We have extremely supportive parents who believe the way we are teaching is a match for their children.
My students are scientists, geographers, musicians, bakers, readers and writers. They are inquisitive, sensitive, and love learning!
My Project
Our absolute favorite time for reading is right after lunch. The students clean their tables one by one, then they go and find a book at their reading level. They usually find a little corner of the room and settle in for thirty minutes of reading. My assistant and I read with four to five students each during this magical time. This year, in a class of 28, we will be able to read with each child every three days.
Last year, it was amazing to watch how my first graders started with little paper readers and progressed to chapter books. A colleague who had a kindergarten last year, lent us her collection of chapter books. She is moving up to first grade so she will need those back this year.
My struggling readers and first graders will enjoy the King Series of beginning readers. It will be fantastic to have a leveled set my students can use independently. This will help develop intrinsic motivation as they progress as readers.
The most amazing gift is, the gift to read.
My students would love to see engaging books by Roald Dahl and the King Series. We need to entice readers to love reading. One way is by providing quality books that are on their reading level. Comprehension and vocabulary skills grow the more students read. Please help my students have choices of fantastic books to enhance their love of reading!
