Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of 19 third and fourth grade English Language Learners. My class's primary language is not English. The children require expansion of the English Language through literature and vocabulary. Many of my students have repeated third or fourth grade. This bridge class is the first for this particular grade.
It is incredible to watch these students grow and use what they are learning in class. Recently, the students researched an animal and were studying life cycles. I purchased hermit crabs. WOW!!! The enthusiasm this brought to the classroom has been amazing. This has spring boarded their vocabulary, writing, and interest in Science. They have used graphic organizers and written "books" on the hermit crab. Best of all, they will present their work to the third and fourth grade special education class across the hall to encourage them to become "Enthusiastic Learners" as well.
With this project in mind, I want to continue to encourage my class as they learn best through hands-on materials. Therefore an aquarium would be wonderful. This would encourage use of the internet for research and reading literature by Eric Carl and Leo Leonni, to name a few authors. Students will continue to develop their writing skills. The use of figurative language, adjectives, etc. will continue to be encouraged. By having this aquarium, the students' research skills will also continue to be developed.
Please help us to "SWIM" and not "SINK" this year. Thank you.
