Finding Thier Nook In School

My students need a Nook eReader to become engaged in high interest reading materials while using 21st Century technology skills.

My Students

Do you know what feels like to become so involved in a book that you forget the world around you? Unfortunately many of my students have no idea what this feeling is like. They do not have access to enough books and they are more interested in video games then picking up a book.

My students are 5th graders in a middle school, which services over 900 5th and 6th graders.

Unfortunately our students come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds and do not have a strong drive and value of school. Many students come into 5th grade reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade level. When these students realize they are so far behind they loose even more interest in school.

My Project

I am requesting a Nook eReader for several reasons. One reason is that it will provide my students with a much more expansive library of books. I will be able to download more high interest books. The books they read will not become torn, ripped, loose pages, spilled on, or lost all together. They will be available for my students to read FOREVER! My students also need a hook for reading. While the books I choose are high interest, they need a reason to read that first page. Incorporating the Nook will provide students with that technology hook that so many of my students crave. Students are always more willing to do something if it includes using technology. If I can get my struggling readers (and all other students) reading more simply by putting the book in a digital form I will help not only improve their reading ability but also their confidence therefore helping them to be more successful in school.

My project is important because I want every one of my students to experience the feeling of becoming so engrossed in a book they forget the world around them.

I want to inspire students who hate reading to read that first page and keep on reading!
