My students need a plethora of books about gardening and plants, and they also need a Nook and cover to access interactive and educational gardening books.

My Students
My students do not know the magic of having access to and maintaining a garden. My students do not appreciate being outside and enjoying sunshine. My students do not understand where the food on their plate comes from!
I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day; the English Language Learners. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read.
Of my students, some are receiving Special Education services. Some are receiving Gifted Services. Some have a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD. They are all learning at different levels and in different ways.
My Project
Last year, I incorporated our school/community garden into every subject area. My 2nd grade students learned inches and measurement in our garden. My 5th grade students did a project photographing examples of prepositions in our garden. I use the garden to show my students how science and community improvement can be apart of everyday learning.
The problem I ran into last year was that I did not have an adequate amount of books to satisfy their reading demands. Between my personal library and the school library, my students' desire to read and learn more about seeds, plants, flower, vegetables, and gardening went unfulfilled. With these book titles, my students will have new material to read throughout the entire year. With a Nook, my students can access further books and interactive books to read and continue their quest for knowledge. With your help and the help of FEED USA, hopefully my students will be pillars of gardening know-how.
My students are often times handicapped by the fact they do not know English.
They have to work double duty everyday: learning English AND learning the state mandated material that they are tested on. Well, to bring the material to my students in a way they can succeed is a very fun challenge for me. These books and the Nook will continue their learning and their sense of accomplishment.
