My students need experience in reading and completing full novels.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Do you remember your favorite book and how you couldn't put that book down? My students have limited experience with reading a novel. They need to dive into a book, with my guidance and open their imaginations to the world of reading!
My students live in a poverty stricken, gang infested area.
The school is an inner city school. They grow up in an environment filled with drugs and violence. School is an escape. Many students have very limited parental support in their education. Often they go home to no one and there is no model for them to help inspire the joy of reading.
As teachers, we often know what our students need but we often lack the resources. I want to inspire my students to become readers. Yet, what our resource is a reader. This reader gives the students only partial stories. They rarely read a novel from cover to cover. Last school year, I asked a small group of 7th graders about how many books they completed. They all replied none. I gave them a book and we read it together. This group of students could not wait for the time for us to read again. The students really need to be guided through reading a complete book from start to finish. I do not have good class sets of books and this project would be a start. The students could leave my class saying they completed books from start to finish. Perhaps this project could introduce my students to "diving into a good book" and that would inspire them to read more!
This project is so important because I want my students to be real readers.
I want them not to simply learn how to read and answer questions. I want them to learn to read. As I tell them each year, to become a better reader, you have to read. That is the goal for this project!
