My Students
My students struggle with finding books that interest them.
The vast majority of these students who can't find interesting books are 6th grade boys between the ages of 11 and 14.
Our middle school doesn't allow students to play sports until they are in the 7th grade; however, sports is still foremost on many of these boys' minds. With the exception of P.E., this may be the only chance these young men get to experience sports, even if it's only in a fantasy world during class time.
My Project
I'm requesting books with sports themes to bolster my boys' reading choices. During our weekly quiet reading time, I'd love to see everyone--not just the females--so engrossed in a book that the rest of the world disappears. The books I have are generally donated by female readers after they finish, so I have a collection of Wuthering Heights, Twilight, and other books that most middle school boys wouldn't be caught dead holding in public.
The books requested in this project serve two purposes.
First, increased interest in reading leads to improved literacy. Second, the books on this list are more than just fluff reading; they teach strong lessons on life and character.
By donating, you are making a two-fold investment in these young men's lives. These young men will grow into the leaders of our middle school, and everything we can do to reinforce positive character and interest in education will pay off dividends in the future.
