The vast majority of these students who can't find interesting books are 6th grade boys between the ages of 11 and 14. Our middle school doesn't allow students to play sports until they are in the 7th grade; however, sports is still foremost on many of these boys' minds. With the exception of P.E., this may be the only chance these young men get to experience sports, even if it's only in a fantasy world during class time.
