Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first year teacher at Columbia Explorers Academy. I teach in a sixth grade classroom and teach all subjects. Columbia Explorers Academy is a Title I school where the majority of the students (98%) are from low income families and receive free/reduce lunch. Many of my students view reading as their least favorite subject. I believe a lot of it has to do with not having exposure to books at their reading or interest level. I believe to improve my students' essential reading strategies they need books that are intriguing and that they can relate to. I am planning to implement the novel "Seedfolks" by Paul Fleischman during our guided reading. The novel "Seedfolks" is a great story about thirteen very different voices-old, young, Haitian, Hispanic, tough, haunted, and hopeful tell one amazing story about a garden that transforms a neighborhood. One by one, a number of people of varying ages and backgrounds transform a trash-filled inner-city lot into a productive and beautiful garden, and in doing so, the gardeners are themselves transformed. I feel my students can truly connect to this text and I hope this book will inspire them to make a difference in their own community. I am asking for a classroom set of 35 copies of "Seedfolks" and a copy on audio for my struggling readers and to use as a listening center.
