My Students
I remember playing with my father's guitar for the first time. I loved the way it felt in my arms. I was only 9 or 10, but it made a huge impact on my life. Unfortunately, my students do not have the same experiences at home.
As their teacher, I try to provide them with new experiences.
My students don't have musical instruments lying around the house. Some of my students live in shelters. Most of them, if not all of them, are not exposed to different types of music or musical instruments. Music is a gift. It can take you away from all of your problems for the time you are enjoying it. These students would also benefit from the structure music provides. My ESL students may not speak English perfectly (some can't speak English at all), but music can unite us. Music is a universal language, which can bring a smile to all of their faces.
My Project
With these resources, I could teach my students how to play the guitar. I would break them into groups and take one group each day of the week. They would learn about the parts of the guitar, how to play songs, different musical genres, and all about rhythm. This would be the highlight of their day. Who knows how many students will end up playing the guitar for the rest of their lives, which is a gift that never stops giving.
Please help the children of my school in Brooklyn, NY.
They will appreciate your gift more than you could imagine. This could change their lives. Some of them may choose to play their guitar throughout their lives instead of spending time getting into trouble. Some of them may become musicians. All because of you and your gift.
