Do you remember the first book that you fell in love with? My students insist that they hate to read, but I know they just haven't found the right book. "The Hunger Games" is a novel that deals with poverty, friendship, and loyalty. I know there is something in it for each one of my students.
My 11th grade English students are witty and creative.
They are always entertaining me, but it pains me that they find English and reading to be boring. I teach at a low income school and many of my students are "at risk." They will be seniors next year and it worries me that most of them despise reading. College is difficult, but it must seem almost impossible for those who hate to read and write. I feel as though "The Hunger Games" can spark an interest in reading for my students. Many of my students are mature beyond their years. They have to take care of brothers and sisters or even children of their own, much like the novel's protagonist, Katniss. It is unfortunate, but I am sure the idea of going hungry is not at all foreign to some of my students. I am sure that each one of them can identify with Katniss as she fights for her life throughout the novel.
I truly believe that "The Hunger Games" is the one novel that will leave my students hungry for more. Besides creating a life long appreciation for reading, this story will be the perfect way to end the year with my students. "The Hunger Games" has all of the literary elements necessary for a page turning story. I also want to promote high level thinking and have my students look at the novel as if it were a satire. I want to teach my students to formulate their own opinions and initiate thoughtful discussions with one another. We will have Socratic seminars as a class and engage in creative writing prompts. One day they may have to describe how they would act during an attack in the hunger games. The next day they may have to write a letter as if they were one of the characters. There are countless activities and lessons that can stem from this one novel. "The Hunger Games" will be a culmination of everything they have learned thus far in English III.
My students live in a world ruled by celebrity, cell phones, and social networking.
They feel that they are too socially advanced to be captivated by a novel. As their teacher, I know it is my duty to prove them wrong. I know "The Hunger" Games" will be my greatest tool in this endeavor.
