Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Part of what makes science more than simple memorization of equations and ideas is seeing and doing it in action. A lot of what I will be doing in the physics classroom will be experiments and discussions. However, with the Internet and animation, many concepts that can't be shown using pictures from my students' textbooks or the chalkboard or even classroom experiments can be shown on the big screen using video and animation. I want my students to have access to a classroom digital LCD projector, simple computer speakers and a laser pointer to enhance their visual and auditory understanding of physics, as well as any other science concepts explored in class. I will be teaching Regents-level tenth grade physics, physical science, and potentially any other science class at a relatively-new theatre arts school in the Bronx, New York. Our school has recently been approved to add a high school to the existing middle school. This year is the first year that tenth grade has been offered at the school. While the staff, students and I are very excited for the new grade, materials are lacking. The gift of a digital projector for Macs and PCs, computer speakers, and a laser pointer would enhance the learning of over 80 students in tenth grade science as well as the students of other teachers who can borrow the projector for enhancing their arts, English, math or social studies class. I can't tell you how important it is to the staff of the school, the students and me that science be an interesting and exciting part of their high school education. The Regents science exams are high-stakes exams that have proved challenging to the students in my school. I want to give my students everything I can to prepare them for success. The gift of a digital projector can offer valuable and meaningful learning experiences to my students and illuminate difficult ideas in science with the technology of today.
