How do you make reading fun? Step 1) students must be equipped with the skills to decode words and make meaning; Step 2) readers need choices so that they are able to select books that they are interested in; and Step 3) readers need a comfortable place where they can curl up with their book. My students do not have the luxury of walking to the local Starbucks or coffee shop to do such curling. They come from rough places and often difficult circumstances. To help create for them a more ideal reading environment it is my hope to create for them a Reader's Cafe in our classroom. I would like to complete this atmosphere by equipping our library area with comfortable chairs and cushions. All of my students will be able to enjoy this space. They will be able to take pride in their reading and see it as more than a task for school but an activity for enjoyment. Please help me help them to become lifelong readers and discover all of the worlds of books!
