Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Old food...seems so stinky doesn't it? It is so easy to just throw it away and let the local landfill take care of it. Wouldn't it be nice to show children a different, more environmentally safe way to use discarded lunch food? Maybe our new school garden can benefit from this while we are at it!
We are a public school located in an urban locale.
Over 80 percent of the children are on free or reduced lunches. Generally, children who meet this criteria fall into the category of "high-risk". They are eager for new experiences and, like all children, are very willing to integrate new ideas into their daily lives.
My Project
Our school has a great new opportunity in that we are beginning a school garden at the start of the new year! Given that children have limited knowledge of soil and where it comes from, I thought this would be an excellent shot at teaching kids about composting and how soil is actually made. The 2 large composting bins would be kept in our school cafeteria, while the smaller tabletop models would be used to demonstrate what is actually happening as items are broken down into usable material. Afterwords, we can use the thermometers and pH kits to test and compare compost versus dirt and store bought soils. This project teaches basic scientific principles while nudging kids into an environmentally aware mindset!
I am on a mission to save the Earth, one young brain at a time.
These are children who will never say that they can't keep a plant alive. Why? Because they will understand the Earth, the soil. I welcome you to join my mission!
