I am a third grade teacher who teaches in a predominately African American and Hispanic low socioeconomic population. Majority of my students have never left their immediate area. With a lot of hard work and dedication from our staff our school has made great lengths in improving the education of our students in math and reading. However more strides are needed to improve science. As a teacher with a degree in earth science, I enjoy using live material and various tools to help my students explore science. However finding material to provide the students is limited. My proposal would like to provide a functioning laboratory for my students to feel like actual scientists. There is much research to show that the instruction of science helps promote analytical and reasoning skills. Actual science experimentation provides an avenue for students to ask questions, generate data, evaluate information and solve problems. The materials we gather can help the students conduct better experiments and compete in various science fairs. I always enjoy the excitement my students have whenever I bring out science material for them to explore. They are eager to try and do well to learn from their predictions and mistakes. It is always an eye opening moment when something happens they did not think would occur. This project will benefit 25 students encompassing reading and mathematics through science exploration.
