My Students

Books are the doorway to far away places. Funding has been so drastically cut in Kansas that my students and I are actively seeking money for new books for our Read and Do Club.

Our school is a PreK-4 building in a rural setting.

Over half of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Our fourth grade has 3 classes with all students leveled for reading groups. Each reading group has approximately eight students. This year's class shows special interest in literature and writing.

My Project

The RAD (Read and Do) club meets bi-weekly after school. The schedule routinely accommodates three centers. Center one is actual reading time. Center two is an activity directly relating to the books. Center three is a book themed cooking or baking activity.

This project is of utmost importance because it allows students to explore the joys of reading by using multiple intelligences and multiple sensory activities.

Active involvement in reading experiences transfers concrete knowledge to abstract comprehension.
