Do you remember what it was like the first time you smashed a ball of clay between your hands in art class? Well many of my students have not had this opportunity before, and I would like to make this change for them, to complete a ceramic project the way professional artists do...with GLAZE!
I teach approximately 480 students, ranging from grades kindergarten to sixth grade on a weekly basis, at an inner city elementary school.
My students have so much bad going on in their lives outside of school, that I would like to think that my art room is a place for them to escape and let their imaginations run wild! All of my students are all talented in their own ways, but at home they may not have a chance to explore those talents or have the encouragement to do so.
My Project
The resources I am requesting are ceramic glazes all the traditional colors. As of right now I have all the other components I need for a ceramics unit- a brand new kiln and a large supply of clay- but I am missing the final piece, which is the glaze. I want my students to get the full experience of the ceramics medium, and I feel that by being able to complete their clay projects with glaze they will get a feel for how professional working artists do ceramics. Majority of my students, being that I teach at an inner city school, do not even have simple art supplies such as markers and crayons for personal use. But I hope to give them a chance to experience a more professional art medium in art class, in hopes that it sparks their artistic talents!
I feel that this project is important for me and my students because it will give them a first hand experience into the processes of how ceramic artists create their art.
It will also give the students something physical to keep to remember the experiences in making it. Or they could give it to a loved one to share the story of all the hard work they put into making the piece. But how proud could a young student be if they make a clay project but cannot add any glaze to finish it?...
