Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I would like to purchase a 55 gallon aquarium to raise African Chiclids in. I teach at a school where most of my children have never been to the ocean and this will allow us to talk about some of the different types of fish that are found in the marine environment. I teach Biology and Honors Biology and we discuss ecology in these classes. With this tank, it will allow us to view some of the concepts in ecology first-hand. My students will benefit from this experience because they will help raise and observe the fish and their environment. It is a very important concept that our students learn that there are numerous factors that influence how animals live. This tank will allow us to view these things and test different types of effects on the coloration of the fish. The first activity that my students will participate in with this project is to begin to set up the tank and take readings from it. They will learn that you can not simply throw fish in the tank but you must begin to build up the algae, salinity, and pH of the water. This will truly allow them to experience what we are learning.
