Hello there! I am a first year science teacher at a new high school in the Bushwick area, called Bushwick Leaders' High School for Academic Excellence. Our school was designed to provide quality education for students in the Bushwick community, which is a low-income community. We will be entering our fourth year this September, and have decided to offer an AP Chemistry class to our seniors as a way for them to earn college credits. Many of our students have little to no lab experience, since our school does not currently have a laboratory, so I conduct all of our experiments in a small classroom with a sink.
My students are extremely excited about the opportunity of taking a college-level chemistry class, since they will be entering college with a significant amount of laboratory experience. However, due to our small size (approximately 297 students), we are unable to receive the funding necessary to conduct such a class. My students are in need of AP Chemistry review books, as well as lab supplies. Specifically, there is a complete set available on line with all of the supplies needed to conduct all 14 required AP Chemistry labs. This would be extremely helpful fo my students, and would help to spark their interest in pursuing science as a career.
Knowing that our first senior class will be graduating in May of 2007, I wish to prepare them for the competitive college world, and give them the opportunity to succeed!
