What would you like to hear first, the good news or the bad news? Unfortunately, there is bad news: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores of black, Hispanic, and low-income students are at least 20 points BELOW the scores of their more affluent and white peers. Twenty points is the equivalent of two grade levels or more! ?Studies reveal that in inner cities across the country, more than half of all black men still do not finish high school.? -NAACP ?The result is increasing numbers of Black youths are on the streets without guidance or educational support for their development? ?NAACP Now it's time for the GOOD NEWS! Hooray! My soon-to-be fourth graders at Dodge Elementary School in Chicago LOVE TO READ and DEFY THOSE ODDS EACH AND EVERY DAY! Dodge Renaissance Academy is located on the near west side of Chicago, and the population is 99% African American. I currently teach a class of 20 third graders and will be moving on with the same children to be their fourth grade teacher next year. I am in desperate need of additional books, because they have read most or all of the ones that I currently have in my classroom. I just can't say enough about what wonderful and enthusiastic young readers I have in my class. These children have worked so hard learning skills and strategies as they read their way through my classroom library. Because of their determination and hard work, I am realizing that I urgently need several new books for these children to read, especially as we move together to the next school year during fourth grade. I have hand selected a number of specific picture and chapter books that I know are of interest and also are relevant to the lives of African American urban children. Many of the titles which I selected are of particular interest to boys. With your generous support, I can continue to encourage my young readers' desire to learn!
