I am a science teacher teaching Integrated Science 9th Grade, Physics, and Astronomy for 11th and 12th graders. I teach regular classes, Chinese Bilingual, and ELD science class. I have a science/math tutorial afterschool in my classroom. There are students who help tutor others and mostly tutees who need help with their homework/labwork or studying for a test. Almost all these kids are of low income from many ethnic background. Some also come for help in translation of text from English into their native language. I also teach an independent AP Physics (Calculus based) class after school. This is a non-credit class and just for the few who really want to learn Physics. I find that students who teach learn their science much better than those who just do the work. The tutors get a chance to express themselves, learn social skills, and remember their science concepts for a longer time. The tutees often find asking other students who speak their native tongue better because of the many languages and different dialects of our diverse school population. I would like to reward both tutors and tutees with coupons or gift certificates for healthy food (In and Out Burgers , Jamba Juice) or science toys (from the Exploratorium or Nature Company Store, or Discovery Channel Store). The students are often hungry for food and drink after 30 minutes and science toys would tease their curiosity about science. Thank you!
