Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember what it was like to pick up rocks and leaves that looked cool, observing nature, playing in the dirt? Most of my students are not allowed to play outside. What I bring my students are experiences that they don't get at home, as well as try to prepare them for the 21st century.
I work in a high poverty, highly diverse school in NC.
Our school has over 37 countries represented by our students. Our students are bright, amazing kids that are not held down by their economic class. They have dreams, they have goals, and as the science teacher to all 700+ students I try to inspire them to make good decisions for their future. These children live in some of the poorest conditions of our city, yet remain eager to learn and expand their knowledge. 90% of our students do not have computers at home. Those that do, don't have Internet connections. The only technology most of our students have in their houses is television. Some don't even have telephones. 50% of the families don't have cars. Our school is one big family. We have high expectations for everyone and teach character education. Our staff might not be able to buy new clothes, shoes, and school materials for all of our students, so we give them what we can ... knowledge for successful living.
My Project
I would love for our students to have digital cameras. We are a title one school and have some technology to share with our students, but I feel that by having these cameras in my classroom I can make the students more a part of our experiments and group PowerPoints. They will be able to use the camera throughout each step of the scientific process. We can use their pictures on our school's morning news program. They can create PowerPoint and SmartBoard presentations with their findings. We can go outside to record the cloud cover and types of weather we see. We can go look at nature and find insects, bugs, and types of plants around our school and bring them back to class to download the pictures to create nature journals. Some of our students have never used a camera - unless it was attached to their parents' cell phone. These cameras will open thousands of possibilities and experiences for our students.
Digital cameras would add such an amazing element to the students' learning experience.
It will open doors to new technology, and help prepare them for the technological age that we live in by giving them time with the camera downloading and creating presentations with a computer. More than anything, my students deserve this. They are such amazing children and they will love every minute they are able to use the camera to record, observe, and explore. Thank you!
