Do you remember catching grasshoppers, playing with rolly-pollies, or watching ants wondering how they did what they did? Help fund a child's chance to be actively engaged in the nature around them and learn and be inspired from it!
I work at multiple elementary school sites with gifted kids who already have clear passions and interests.
They are extremely inquisitive and eager to contribute to make the world a better place. I see my job as providing opportunities for these children to question and explore their interests and build on their strengths. This grant would greatly help us with much needed resources for letting students do some of those explorations, figuratively, and literally, out of the classroom settings, sparking who knows how many life-long passions.
My Project
In Oklahoma we have strong ties to the land and that includes its insects! Three of our local elementary schools are fortunate enough to have outdoor classrooms for student and teacher use. We would like to have supplies that would enable us to safely catch and identify insects around our schools. We have requested nets, viewing jars, a collecting and mounting kit, field guides for identification, posters of arachnids, beetles, and butterflies for our rooms, and some permanent insect specimens. These supplies are just a basic foundation that gives the children a place to start. With your help of the tools and the guides, we can do the hard part of hunting and learning!
We chose items that could be used by any teacher so that it could impact the greatest number of children.
We also chose items that were non-consumable, planning to make the most of this donation. How will it impact our children? That is a harder question, but ask yourself, if you had a place as a child with a pond, trees, and field, and you had a teacher who shared with you the wonder of bugs and nature, would you be inspired?
