"But there are only five minutes left in class." I can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard that. Main instruction is over and there is only five minutes left during class. The kids want a break. But five minutes times 90 classes is equal to 450 minutes or 5+ more blocks of teaching!

This coming year, I will be working with the incoming ninth graders, the same group of kids I taught during 8th grade math.

I've decided to move up to the high school with them and continue our learning plan. Yet, as I do that I also realize that I will need new and creative ways to keep them focused and occupied during those "extra minutes" as I won't be able to use the same old bag of tricks from last year.

My Project

So often the last five minutes of class are lost to shuffling papers, pushing in chairs, and random chatting throughout the room. In the past,I've found it difficult to continue the learning cycle in these spare moments, however, the games and activities selected through this program will provide me that opportunity. The various matching card sets will provide a quick review for pair or small groups of students. They can select their own review or I can review groups planned out before class starts. Whether a student needs a little more practice with linear equations, quadratics, factoring or something else, these card games will provide that review in a fun interact way, and can be used throughout the year to reinforce concepts for all. The "I have...Who has..." set can be used as a quick multiple topic review for the class as a whole. The joke workbook will provide a stimulating means for students to think about concepts and vocabulary in a unique way that stimulates learning.
