My Students
For so many of my students, obtaining basic materials can be an obstacle. Something as simple as providing each student with a mathematics binder, helps them maintain order and promotes learning.
My students live in high poverty areas and our school has been called a "dropout factory" in years past, however for three consecutive years we have made gains in our standardized test scores.
For many students coming to school represents a safe haven to escape the violence and drugs that goes on in their house and their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the school building is older and all students don't have access to the same resources. So it is my goal as a teacher to make my classroom as comfortable as possible, to foster an atmosphere where all students will want to learn. This creates a burden on me as a teacher, because often times I come out of pocket to fund basic supplies such as pencils, paper and notebooks.
My Project
During the first week of school, I require that all students have a mathematics binder. This binder can stay in my classroom or students can take it home to study, and it serves as a one-stop location to find notes, assignments, projects and old quizzes and tests. Students that have been more successful in my class in years past, have kept a well organized binder, others that have been less successful often don't have a binder or know where their notes are. Students feel safe leaving the binder in the classroom and they also learn how to better organize materials.
This project is so important to be because it is used every day of the school year.
I am going into my fourth year of teaching and I have recycled and reused almost all of the binders I previously had, the current economy doesn't allow me to the flexibility to buy them like I have in the past. Every student having access to a binder allows them to feel like an integral part of the classroom environment.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
