My students live in high poverty areas and our school has been called a "dropout factory" in years past, however for three consecutive years we have made gains in our standardized test scores. For many students coming to school represents a safe haven to escape the violence and drugs that goes on in their house and their neighborhoods. Unfortunately, the school building is older and all students don't have access to the same resources. So it is my goal as a teacher to make my classroom as comfortable as possible, to foster an atmosphere where all students will want to learn. This creates a burden on me as a teacher, because often times I come out of pocket to fund basic supplies such as pencils, paper and notebooks.
