My Students
We have all heard the saying, "Seeing is believing." I think this is especially true when it comes to teaching math. Students must be able to see what they are learning in order to understand the objective being taught and to believe in their own ability to successfully complete complex problems.
My students this year will are comprised of middle school and high school students from predominately low-income communities throughout Missouri.
Many of the students at the Middle/High School will be new coming from one of 28 schools closed in the MO School District last year. Our school district is in the process of restructuring our schools to better educate our students. Starting the new school year with adequate technology and teaching tools will be one of the best ways to begin to raise student achievement for all children throughout the city. So many of my middle school students are beginning to dream about careers in engineering and medicine, and I want to be able to give them a solid foundation in math to prepare them for college and their future careers.
My Project
One of the most important ways for students to learn how to solve complex math problems is to follow me, the teacher, as I model problems and strategies for class. Due to our school's lack of technology and inability to replace broken resources, I spent the second half of last year without a projector and way to efficiently model math problems to our class. My middle school math students rely on guided practice problems means of learning math. A document projector would be invaluable to my ability to teach pre-algebra and algebra next year. It would also allow students to show their work to the class and engage in student-led discussions.
I cannot imagine being able to adequately teach math to my middle school students without the ability to model problems for them.
Our school district is in the process of moving out of numerous school buildings and shuffling supplies, and I fear that I may never receive the tools I need to teach in my math lab. Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you!!!
