My Students
I've learned that an elementary classroom needs at least 1500 books of varied levels for children to read. I want to give my students every advantage possible to succeed in reading. In my perfect world, every classroom would be equipped with the necessary resources!
My Alabama school is described as "inner city." I see kids who need love and support to make their dreams come true.
Many of them come from single-parent families, and parents do not have the resources to buy books for their children. Sometimes, they cannot even get their kids to the local library, which is less than two miles from our school. Therefore, it is my responsibility to give these kids the best reading resources possible during the school day. My students are eager to learn, and they love to re-read the books that we share during read-alouds. What better gift can I give than the tools that foster a lifelong love of reading?
My Project
We need sight word, word building and vocabulary activity kits and books that are appropriate levels to match their reading ability. I think these materials and books will motivate them to read daily, and instill a love of reading in my students. I've seen my students' faces light up when we read stories together. By providing books that are appropriate for my students' ability levels, you can help me instill a love of reading and learning in children that need all the encouragement possible to escape poverty and avoid becoming a statistic as a dropout.
You are reading this request because one or more teachers cared about you and taught you how to read.
Imagine living in a world that you don't understand because you can't read. Being able to read is necessary to succeed in life. Books will empower my kids to strive for success.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
