I am a Reading Specialist at Northpointe Intermediate in Tomball, Texas. I work with struggling readers in 5th and 6th grades.
Many of these students are having difficulty with fluency, or the ability to read in a fluid manner with a quick pace. Most of our struggling readers are reading below 100 wpm. Our goal is to get all students reading 118 wpm or more. One way to increase fluency is oral reading, and a great way to do this in an interactive way is to use Reader's theater.
In order to do this, we need Reader's theater books. This project will meet the needs of around 150 students. The Reader's Theater books we have chosen are at an intermediate level. Our first play will be Roald Dahl's ?The Twits.? Students will receive parts in the play, rehearse at school and at home, and have an opportunity to share the play with other students.
Reader's Theater allows students to practice reading fluently in an engaging activity. These students will learn that words on a page are more than JUST words on a page. They will connect with the author's meaning, which also improves comprehension. Further, these students will gain confidence in their reading ability which is paramount to getting them to read more and at higher levels.
