Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My students are really interested in nature, especially flowers. I would like to start a classroom flower and vegetable garden. We would need a variety of seeds, planters or pots, dirt, watering utensils, and gardening tools. I am a teacher at Bethune Elementary, a school that has a 3 year looping cycle. The third grade students I have now will be together for another 2 years. My goal is to keep the project going for that time. My ultimate goal is to use the garden as both a science and nutritional health teaching tool. The students will first list the basic life processes and determine what is classified as living or non-living. We will decide what our plants will need in order to grow. We will discuss the structures and function of the various plant parts. (Seed producing plant) We will plant the seed making daily observations and performing care-taking procedures. We will discuss how harmful elements in the environment can affect not only the health and growth of plants but also the negative effects on humans (living beings). We will create one to two bionomes for comparison of plant growth and survival rates. Ultimately, we will have planted fruit bearing plants and researched their nutritional value compared to less healthy popular snacks. Thank you in advance.
