"Can we have more time to read?"
These are the words that every teacher dreams of hearing. At Burley Elementary, a literature and writing magnet school, my students literally beg for time to read. Whether students are absorbed in the newest young adult novel, or captured by a classic anthology of poetry, their love of reading lights up the classroom.
The heart of our classroom is our library area. Although the library is still "under construction," students see beyond the broken bookcases and the damaged book bins. Currently, the library is used as a special area for reading and writing. Literature discussions and weekly class meetings are also held in the library. The library is a perfect place to instruct and guide students in a relaxed atmosphere. The setting facilitates meaningful discussion and learning among students.
In order to transform our library into a truly comfortable, cozy space we are in desperate need of bookcases and book bins to display our literature. Students have requested that we add floor pillows and beanbag chairs to expand the library area. Two floor lamps would also help create a warm, inviting environment.
The middle school years can be exceedingly difficult to students as they grapple with the many challenges of growing up. Despite all the changes my students are going through, their love of reading remains. With your help, I can help my students' continue to explore their passion for reading and learning.
