My Students

Should President Obama take over legislative power? With Congress having an approval rating of only 10%, should we send congressional members home? I'd love for my students to finally have a textbook to go along with their teacher's explanations for how government works.

My students are seniors who are about to enter American society as fully-fledged citizens who can vote and help direct the future of our country.

They are generally conservative in terms of politics and have a limited exposure to diversity. Their community has strong ties to their European ancestry. They are interested in politics and are intrigued by Iowa's role in national elections. Most students attend four year colleges after graduating. This is in part due to the communities healthy support of education.

My Project

I'm going to teach government for the first time next year and would love for my students to have access to the information contained in a government textbook. The opportunities available for my students to engage with their community during election cycles are boundless. With national politicians rolling through Iowa every few years, my students can become informed participants in our electoral process. The text helps me in this endeavor.

However, my students will benefit even more from the opportunity to become informed citizens. Nothing is more important in our society than a properly functioning government.
