I am a special education teacher who teaches math in an extremely unique high school. My small school is housed in a residential treatment facility for young women. All of my students are wards of the state, placed in this treatment center by the state Department of Human Services. Most of my students are eligible for special education, all of them are receiving mental health services, and none of them have healthy, nurturing, parental support. Although this is the neediest group of students that I have worked with, they are the most motivated learners I have ever had.
With the recent state of our economy, school budgets are getting hit pretty bad. Our principal was forced to cut 5% of our budget for THIS school year. So, we are currently on a spending freeze, and the next couple of years are not looking any better. Unfortunately, my students depend on the school to provide their basic supplies, right down to pencils and paper. Our supplies are practically gone, and we can not order any more for the rest of the school year. My students have no resources of their own, and now, the one resource they could depend on is dried up. We are in dire need.
My students need everything! We are out of all of the basic school supplies, such as paper, notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, glue, file folders, binders, rulers, and the list goes on. I do what I can to not waste a thing; we reuse notebooks, use pencils down to the nub, but eventually we will soon have nothing. It is very hard to teach, let alone learn, without these basic necessities. The majority of my students never had an opportunity to succeed at school, but my small school with dedicated teachers, gives them a chance. It's a shame that lack of supplies can get in the way of their success.
You can truly help these kids. This is their chance to get out of the system and on to college. You can help them reach this goal. There is not a more needy population than the girls I work with. They have seen and been through the absolute worst. Help them feel that they are worth it by giving them the resources they need to flourish in school.
