The Camp Half-Blood Book Club for boys was created to build upon my students' enthusiasm for the Rick Riordan "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" books while meeting their very real need to become better readers with a greater vocabulary.
I teach in a small, rural school district where the poverty rate stands at 60%. Most of my students haven't been 100 miles from home. Very few ever get to see a museum or art gallery in a large city. Their cultural experiences come largely from what is provided at school. Many of my students are also reluctant readers and had never discovered how a book can pull you in and make you hang on the edge of your seat waiting to listen to more of a story until I brought my copy of The Lightning Thief in to read to them. Now they beg to hear more. We checked out all 3 books on Greek mythology from the school library. The kids are making posters for the room, a bulletin board for the hall, and researching everything they can on our class computer in any spare moments to learn more about ancient Greece. Their energy and enthusiasm is contagious.
I'd like to provide my kids with their own copies of the Percy Jackson series of books so they can read along with me or read ahead to find out what happens next to Percy. I also want to feed their enthusiasm for ancient Greece with lessons on the actual Greek myths, Greek history, architecture, art, and culture. The books I've requested will make this possible. I've also requested materials that will help us create our own art and architecture in the Greek style to display in our school. The kids are so enthused to share what they are learning with their peers at school and we are planning a celebration when we finish reading the series complete with Greek food. Having copies of the Percy Jackson series of books in my classroom ensures that Percy will be around for a long while to capture the imagination of other reluctant readers as well.
With your help, the Camp Half-Blood Book Club will be so much more than me reading to my students. We will be able to all read, research and learn not just about Percy Jackson and the 21st century version of the Greek gods, but all about ancient Greece, its culture, art, and architecture. We will be building reading skills, research skills, writing skills, and artistic skills. We will be learning about great literature, history, math, and art all because my students wanted to know more about a book I read aloud to them and you provided our class with the resources.
