I am a fifth grade teacher at New Sullivan Elementary School, located on the Southeast side of Chicago, Illinois. The school services Pre-K thru eighth grade and a special education inclusion program. The population consists of 826 students and 95% receive free or reduced lunch. I teach general education to 27 wonderful fifth grade students. The students have been involved in an environmental stewardship learning experience since September 2005. The students have studied the natural environment of plants and animals on the southeast side of Chicago. They have studied how and why these environments change and the effect that those changes have on plants and animals. The students have an opportunity to participate in a week long learning camp outside of the classroom. This trip takes place at a nature resort located in Indiana, during the weeks of July 24-28 or August 7-11, 2006. The fifth grade students will explore our regional natural resources; wetlands, prairies, dunes, and woodlands, observe animals in their natural habitats, and participate in the local restoration of indigenous plants. Due to the low socio-economic status of the students attending this school I am requesting funding for this trip. All other materials and necessities will be provided. The money will be use to pay the tuition for the 27 students. This field experience will enhance the students understanding of our environment, help to build their self-esteem, and further the development of pride in the students for the environment in which they live. The overall project will improve the students awareness for taking care of our planet, so that it will support life for animals, plants, and humans.
