My students need 30 copies of "The Broken Bike Boy and the Queen of 33rd Street", 30 subscriptions to Time for Kids magazine, a Get The Picture Main Idea Reading Comprehension Game and 2 additional reading resources.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Hello. I am a fourth grade teacher of 28 students in a high need, low-income, inner-city school.
One obstacle my students face is that their reading level is far below where it should be. Many of my students are just not interested in reading. I had made it my goal this year to get my students to love reading. A friend suggested an author named Sharon Flake. She writes novels that inner city students can relate to. From the first minute my students picked up "The Skin I'm In", they were hooked. This led us to read, "Money Hungry" and the sequel, "Begging for Change". My students have taken such an interest in reading that they beg to read more of her books. I am now confident that their reading level and comprehension continues to grow everyday.
A class set of Sharon Flake's "The Broken Bike Boy and the Queen of 33rd Street" would be a wonderful surprise. That, along with the reading and literacy tools, and the subscription to "Time for Kids" will keep them reading more all year long. My students would jump for joy over the new pencil sharpener. Currently we are using a little mini 99-cent sharpener that must be passed around the class. We put our pencil shavings in an empty Kleenex box. The sharpener would save us a lot of time.
Your help and generosity will continue to keep my students moving forward and aid in closing the reading gap between inner city and suburban schools. Now that our students are hooked on reading, the materials provided will be the final piece of the puzzle to ensure success.
