The Most Important Piece of Technology For Our Class
My students need a document camera for the classroom.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade to an amazing group of low-income students in California. Though over 90% of the students at our school receive free lunch, they are showing amazing growth and working very hard to learn each day. Last year, our school was excited to learn that we had some of the largest academic gains of any elementary school in the entire school district.
Though we're seeing gains, we still have a lot of room to grow. Many of my students are still not reading and doing math at the appropriate grade level. One issue that is holding us back is the lack of technology - my students do not have access to the same resources that their higher-income peers have. I know that they deserve access to an excellent education, so I am determined to close that gap on their behalf.
The single most useful resource for our classroom would be a document camera. With the document camera, ANY item I place under it will be displayed for my students. No transparencies needed! I can place multiplication flash card on the document camera and it would be displayed in full color for my students to answer. I can even place whole books on the camera and model reading strategies and show illustrations as I read aloud.
Things other than paper can be displayed as well! As we are doing various science experiments, we can do them on the document camera and each student can see the experiment perfectly. No more pushing to see the experiment close up.
Another exciting use of this camera will be the ability for all students to share their work with each other. As students are learning about fractions, I can ask them to come up to the front and, using the camera, show their drawings to the rest of the class while explaining their thinking.
Thank you so much for considering this - my entire classroom of third graders and I thank you! This will truly revolutionize and revitalize our learning. We look forward to sending you pictures and thank you notes.
