This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 5 year-old kindergarten in rural South Carolina. We are a Title One school with 93% of kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. All of our funds for this school year have been frozen. We were told that we will have no funds to order any supplies this year.
As I teach many topics to my kindergarten students, I find it difficult for them understand due to the seating arrangement. The students are currently seated six or four students to a table. They are unable to face the board straight on and have nowhere to store their supplies. In order for all students to see, the tables must be turned sideways to the board. Some students still have to turn completely around to be able to see. Thus, prohibiting the students from having a straight-on view. Also, the students are currently keeping their supplies on the side of their tables (which are very crowded) and this is a huge distraction to these students.
I am asking for ten desks (I could really use 25) to aid in the seating and storage dilemma. If I am able to attain these desks, I will be able to seat the students in a more appropriate manner to maximize their learning.
It is my job as their teacher to provide the most effective learning environment possible. These children need their own space to learn responsibility for their own supplies. They also need their own space so that they can learn to the best of their ability without the elbow of their neighbor in their face.
The impact over the years to come will be tremendous! Thank you for investing in the future of my students.
