Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Instilling a love of reading and books needs to begin at a young age. As an educator I am passionate about getting young children interested in books and developing those pre-reading skills. I am a K-1 teacher with 22 students who are 4 and 5 years old. My school in an innovative pilot school with a high poverty, urban population.
An an educator, I face many obstacles including outdated materials that are not designed to meet the needs of young learners. My students love reading big book stories with predictable text, they get so excited to come up to the easel and find letters or words that they know in the text. It is great to see them happily interact with books. We also love using flannel board stories and props to help us retell our favorite books. Young children love to dramatically act out these stories, pretending to be different characters or even sequencing the different parts of the story.
As a teacher of young children, I am setting the foundation for all future learning. My hopes are that all of my students will develop a love of literacy. I want to help them develop necessary pre-reading skills, which will help them to become successful readers. To help me reach this goal, my classroom is in need of a big easel designed for young children. I would love to read big books to my students without the book falling off the easel. Students will easily be able to interact with the books up close and personal. A new easel will also give us a place to use our flannel board story props, so that students can act out stories and develop their ability to retell a book, deepening their comprehension of that story.
