This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach 5 year-old kindergarten in rural South Carolina. We are a Title One school with 93% of kindergarten students receiving free/reduced lunch. All of our funds for this school year have been frozen. We were told yesterday that we will have no funds to order any supplies this year.
We do not have enough pencils, crayons and writing paper to last the entire school year. In our community, parental contributions are rare. I shudder imagining how this will affect my students readiness for first grade.
The materials I am requesting include enough for me to begin the next school year as well. I am not very hopeful that the budget situation will be improved by then.
I am asking for basic classroom supplies. Writing each day is important. Good writers become good readers. We also write in our journals each day. Students draw a picture and then write about it. It is amazing to watch their progress throughout the year.
Your support of this project will help 23 kindergarten students this year improve their writing skills. The impact over the years to come will be tremendous! Thank you for investing in the future of my students.
