Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a recent Reynolds Institute Fellow in which I received two weeks training in Scholastic Journalism with teachers from all over the state at Kent State University. I teach English and Journalism to mostly senior and various grades at an alternative High School in Michigan's inner-city.

I work at a reconstituted school and we have been taken over by an independent management company. I have no budget and am trying to build a journalism program from the ground up. This is my third year as an advisor and we just ordered a decent camera. I have a passionate student editor-in-chief and she deserves to have the proper equipment.

Our program needs some decent software as well as a camera and other types of technology. Having a state-of-the-art design software like Adobe Creative Suite 4 will allow us to develop into a program that can compete with other programs across the country. The training I went to is connected to ASNE (American Society of Newspaper Editors) and is indirectly connected to the JEA (Journalism Education Association). This can really move my students forward in learning how to express and communicate their ideas.
