Inspiring the Scientific Mind

My students need an updated science laboratory of various supplies that engage them in the inquiry of science including water quality kits, magnet sets, and thermometers.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. G.'s classroom raised $549

This project is fully funded

When you ask a child what their favorite subject in school is, what do they say? In my experience, I rarely hear that science is the top choice. Instead I hear, "I don't like science" or "science is boring". The fact is, more and more of our future inventors (young people) are getting turned off to science. What will our future hold for us if our young people don't become engaged and skilled in this area? I'm a passionate 5th Grade teacher that has taught at a high need school for over eight years now. In my experience, our young students get turned off to this amazing field. In my classroom, we study about ecosystems in our books, but travel to them on the city bus as well. In addition, I guide experiments and inquiry where the students become engaged and motivated to learn more. In my classroom, you hear "I love science", "this is fun" or "I never knew this is science".

Having grown up poor, I know the obstacles a young child faces not only at home, but also in school. In the neighborhoods we live in, we find ourselves with less resources and out dated materials to teach our children. Is this fair? Equitable? Should the young inventor in the inner city school have the same engaging resources as the young inventor in a more financially secure neighborhood?

My students really need updated science supplies so they can do various science experiments. For example, we will be taking a field trip to a local pond area to test water quality and pollution of the area. Students will need water quality strips to explore this concept. Thermometers will be used for our field study to the pond and be utilized inside the classroom for conducting experiments. In Earth and Space Science, students will be able to have a space model of the universe hanging from their ceiling. This will engage them and also allow me to incorporate these models during instruction.

Your help will inspire a diverse group of young inventors in the field of science. Everyday I look into the eyes of bright young children. I always wonder who will be our next Nobel prize winner or possible inventor of a cure for cancer. Anyone can succeed but they need support to do it. From all my heart, thank you for making the difference in a child's life.
