We are an urban school struggling to make the transition from a C school to an A school. Our community needs our school just as much as we need our students. We are striving to show our students that there are other options, new ways of expressing ourselves and that art can help them channel so much of their emotions in positive way.
We see graffiti around us every day. My students can describe in full detail the different gang tags, logos and slogans plastering our community. I want to help them to make the leap from using their fantastic sense of color and style and transfer that energy to positive art that they can wear.
We will be starting a unit on positive messages and tee shirts as a modern poster. By getting their ideas out artistically onto their portable canvases our students will be taking ownership of their expression.
Your care and consideration will help these students to realize that art can be positive and it can express their wants, feelings and needs in much the same way as graffiti without damaging public space. Please help us to put the art back in their hands.
