Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We have visited the San Juan Capistrano Mission in the past, but this years budget cuts makes it very difficult to take the favorite fourth grade field trip, San Juan Capistrano on the Amtrak train. A Visit to the Mission, always make studying California history more exciting. For most of our students Social Studies will be their favorite subject.
Our School is located a low income area of Los Angeles, the campus boarders a Public Housing Project one of the largest housing projects in Los Angeles. The school serves as the after school and weekend play area. Many do not have the opportunity to explore outside the area.
Our standardized test scores increased 20 points, but we still have a way to go. Our goal is to have our students score 800 or above. Educational experiences and field studies such as this one will help us meet our goals.
All of or students participate in the free lunch program. The population consists of approximately sixty per cent (60%) Latino American and forty per cent (40%) African American. Economically our parents' low income is subsidized by the government. The entire school’s population qualifies for the free lunch program.
As much as we would like our students to have all the experiences possible, there is just not enough money in the school budget so we must reach out to ask for assistance. We were recently funded the entrance fee and the workshop to the Mission but we still need assistance with transportation.
