Where in the World Are We?

My students need 3 Explorer globes.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

The 60-odd 5th graders to whom I teach Science and Social Studies all want to touch and investigate the one globe I have in my rural TN class room. Unfortunately, it falls apart every time someone picks it up from wherever I have carefully balanced it!

The only globe in my classroom is a flimsy plastic framed model from a discount store. Not long after it was given to me by the PTO, a student dropped it and broke the stand. There are few other globes in my school building, and most of those are very old. Students need the chance to touch and manipulate a globe to understand location, elevation, the tilt of the earth's axis, how it rotates, and even its orbit around the sun.

Having 3 new, sturdy quality globes in my classroom would allow each table of 6 to 8 students hands-on experience with the features of our planet as well as their place on it. These globes will be used daily in science and social studies for reference and demonstration. Whether shining a flashlight on the globe to illustrate the night/day cycle or moving it around a light source to model the changing seasons, students benefit from being an active part of experiments and demonstrations. When placed in the context of the actual spherical earth, latitude and longitude take on meaning and interpretation that flat maps cannot provide.

By providing these globes for my classroom, you will open up new experiences for my students, most of whom have never had the opportunity to actually touch and use a globe. To them, it will be a novel and exciting experience.
