It's a tiny town in Mississippi in one of the 100 poorest counties in the country, where I teach fifth and sixth graders the reading and writing skills that are going to be essential to changing their life situation.
My district faces unique challenges. In such a poor county, all resources are diverted into the task of simply keeping the schools' doors open. So when 5th and 6th graders enter my classroom, they're already several years behind in their reading and writing skills. In order to equip these students with the skills they need and close the gap between my students and their peers, we have to work unbelievably hard to grow several years over the course of a school. Imagine constantly exhorting a child to work hard to read, and then giving that child tattered old books that holds little interest for that child, or telling that child she can't read today, because there aren't enough books to go around.
Building a quality classroom library is a big part of this solution. Students will not be motivated to work hard to close the gap between their peers just because I say that they should be. Our students aren't yet at the point where they have that intrinsic motivation. They need quality, engaging materials that will allow them to really become interested in what they're reading, and to allow them to build value in reading skills. When they start to see that there is value in reading, they can be more significantly invested and realize the role that hard work will play in closing the gap between themselves and their peers, and how important those skills are for getting them to the places they desire to go in live.
Your help will ensure that my students have the sorts of resources that they need to really build value for learning and start to internalize a belief that education is not just something that they must suffer through, but that it is legitimately the one route that they have in order to get to the sorts of places that they want to go in life. Cycles of poverty and apathy are devastating, and the work of breaking those cycles may be incredibly difficult, but it also incredibly important. Your help will ensure that my students begin to build the sorts of motivations and skills that will make sure that they are empowered to know that they too have access to the corridors of power, and their hard work is the only thing that will get them there. Until those students feel they can do something about the cycles of poverty, apathy and violence they see around them, we don't stand a chance of giving them an opportunity.
